Become a Colour Theory expert
Colour theory is trending on Tiktok and Instagram and for good reason - art theory is an academic discipline and it applies everything from fashion and makeup to every kind of design.
Have you ever wondered why some colour combinations just pop? Or why your complexion comes alive when you wear certain tones? Colour theory is ‘the collection of rules and guidelines which designers use to communicate with users through appealing color schemes in visual interfaces’.. and while we known that there are no rules when it comes to art and self expression, you can check out my favourite resources below if you want to learn more about colour harmonies, triads and tones, and how to up your colour palette game in whatever way gives you like to play with colour. What I bought and loved:
Palette Perfect by Lauren Wager - I picked this up and instantly loved the pages of themed colour palettes which include their hex codes
Interaction of Colour: 50th Edition by Josef Albers & Nicholas Fox Weber - a stylish book on colour theory and interactions; if you love learning about the theory and famous artworks that take advantage of brilliant colour pairings and palettes then this is a great reference to start with.
3 Piece colour wheel - I bought this for my home DIY projects and it has been so useful. It’s also great if (like me) you’re a hands-on learner
The Colour Bible by Laura Perryman - have you ever struggled to name a colour? Laura brings both theory and the history of colours throughout history and it makes for a great read.
Up next on my reading list :
The Secret Lives of Colour by Kassia St. Clair (plus check her out on Insta https://www.instagram.com/secretlivesofcolour )
Matisse: Master of Colour by Volkmar Essers - Matisse prints are everywhere and for good reason - as dopamine dressing continues to trend, Matisse’s fantastic mastery of colour makes his art timeless and relevant
A Dictionary of Colour Combinations by Collectif - a japanese edition book with a minimalist, clean aesthetic and whole volumes of gorgeous colour pairings and palettes.
